Emily Kernick (flat & crown player)
An A to Z of Team Taylor
Emily Kernick (flat & crown player)
Emily says:
"Taylor have been a huge part of my success so far both indoors and out, having used my Taylor Aces to win 5 national titles in the past 3 years, and when recently making my debut for England both indoors and out. I feel confident that I can use them on any surface and play any shot necessary with them".
Which model(s)/size of Taylor bowls do you enjoy playing with and why?
Taylor Ace Size 1 – Mint/White.
These are the bowls I currently use both indoors and outdoors for all disciplines.
It was important to me to find a bowl that felt a similar shape to my crown green bowls, to ensure swapping between versions in the summer is as seamless as possible. The roundness of the Taylor Ace in the smaller size suits my individual needs perfectly and I find them extremely easy to use and play with.
What country/region/club/team do you play for?
Bowls England / EIBA
Solihull Indoor Bowls Club (Indoors)
Royal Leamington Spa (Outdoors)
The Baldwin Bowling Club (Crown)
When and why did you start playing bowls?
I started playing Crown Green when I was very young as my nan and my mum played. I was very keen and started rolling up as soon as I was big enough to hold a bowl. I then started playing competitively in crown leagues when I was 9 years old.
I started playing indoors in 2016 when some bowlers at our crown club suggested we go down to Solihull Indoor and join them over the winter. I immediately caught the bug and loved the precision and tactics of the sport. I then took up outdoor flat in 2022 and continue to play crown green simultaneously during the summer.
Are there any particular stories/incidents you would like to tell us about that relate to your bowling?
In December 2022 I suffered an injury when playing netball and had a compound fracture in my bowling hand 4 weeks before I was due to be competing in the Junior World Championships. I had to have surgery on my hand and have 3 pins inserted to re-align the bones. 4 weeks later and I went and competed and together with Harry Goodwin managed to win a silver medal in the World Junior Mixed Pairs.
In the bowling world who do you most admire and why?
Katherine Rednall.
When I first started indoors, I started watching Potters on the BBC and it’s around the time when she began to dominate. She plays with such composure under pressure, and her ability to grind out results even when she might not be at her best is one of the most admirable parts of her game in my opinion. To go from watching her on TV, to playing alongside her in an England shirt and learning off her has been a huge privilege.
Do you have a favourite – film, book, song, football team, actor, etc. It can be more than one if you like.
Huge Birmingham City Football Club fan – with my grandad having played for them in the 1970’s.
